East Midlands TrainsEast Midlands Trains is to go head to head with colleagues from around the country this summer in a national sporting competition for railway industry staff.

A 30-strong team from East Midlands Trains has signed up to take part in the RailSport Games – a multi-sport competition which pits rail companies against each other across 15 different sports, including football, netball, rugby, darts and badminton.

Staff from across the business, including East Midlands Trains’ Derby headquarters, will take part.

East Midlands Trains, which is owned by Stagecoach, operates more than 470 train services every day throughout the region and manages 90 stations across the network.

The event will be held at Loughborough University between the 8th and 9th of July. It will be the first time the Games has been held in the East Midlands – a region with a rich railway history.

Derby has been building trains for more than 175 years and the city is one of the country’s largest and most significant rail industry centres.

The RailSport Games is open to anyone who works in the rail sector and competitors are welcome to bring friends and family along to take part. As well as providing an opportunity to meet railway colleagues, RailSport encourages employees throughout the rail industry to be more active, supporting an industry-wide focus on health and wellbeing.

Anyone interested in competing and challenging East Midlands Trains for a RailSport medal has until the 12th of June to sign up.

Network Rail, HS2 and Public Health England, which is highlighting its ‘One You’ initiative, are all supporting this year’s competition. The One You campaign has been set up to motivate the British public to live healthier lives. For example, it offers advice on how to quit smoking, diet, get better quality sleep and reduce alcohol consumption.

Kirsty Derry, East Midlands Trains’ HR director, said: “We’re very excited to be taking part in this year’s RailSport Games. It’s a great team-building opportunity for our staff, bringing people together from diverse backgrounds to compete as one team.

We’re really looking forward to getting out on the field; let’s hope we have what it takes to make it through to the finals.”

Paul O’Connor, managing director of event organiser Rail Media, welcomed East Midlands Trains’ entry.

“We’re thrilled to have East Midlands Trains onboard for this year’s competition,” said Paul. “The service East Midlands Trains’ staff provide is vital for the region and it is great to have the backing of the train operator that will be bringing many of our competitors to Loughborough to take part.

”Loughborough University was recently ranked joint first in a list of the best universities in the wold for sport-related courses* and the two-day competition will make use of the university’s renowned sporting facilities.

Loughborough University also has a strong rail engineering pedigree. In 2015, the university’s Control Systems Research Group won an industry award for its fail-safe track switch design, Repoint**.

Paul O’Connor added: “We’re excited to be able to bring an event like RailSport to the East Midlands. The region is home to one of the country’s main rail manufacturing hubs and, by bringing the event to a central location, we look forward to seeing some new faces as well as welcoming back some familiar ones.

“The competition has been going for more than 20 years and we’re keen to see it grow in its new home.”
