Food tourism is growing in popularity. According to a survey, the importance of food and beverage experiences while traveling is on the increase in the last five years. A University of Florida survey reported that 39 million United States leisure travelers opted for a destination based on its culinary offerings, while another 35 million seek out culinary activities once a destination has been chosen. Three-fifths of leisure travelers said that their interest extends beyond dining to actually learning about food and drink, mostly to understand local culture.
In 2011, American Kenny Dunn founded Eating Europe, a food tour service with a mission to take guests on an exploration of hidden communities and vibrant street life with local insiders. From its beginnings in Rome, Eating Europe went on to become one of the largest food tour operators in Europe, now in seven cities serving 50,000 people annually.
Eating Europe is also innovating its tours. For example, they are launching a new family tour in Rome, which is in part a treasure hunt in a local market and in part a cooking class. They aim to offer Eating Europe tours in every major European city so that their customers can have no problem finding them. They are thinking about expanding to the U.S., Asia, and Latin America, but as of now, they are very happy to launch new European experiences.
