Edinburgh Airport and SWR win at ADBA Industry Awards 2016 in the “Best Food Waste Collection System”category

edinburgh airport logoWe are thrilled to announce that SWR and Edinburgh Airport are winners of the ‘Best Food Waste Collection System’ award at the ADBA Industry Awards 2016. David Coaton, Head of Account Management, SWR has worked closely with the airport for the past 5 years and collected the award.

 

David commented “We’re delighted to have SWR’s work with Edinburgh Airport recognised, especially as the awards highlight innovation and achievement right across the industry”.

The ADBA Industry Awards:

Now in their fifth year the AD & Biogas Industry Awards 2016 recognise innovation and achievement across all sectors of the anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry in the UK and internationally.

 

The Judge’s Comments:

“[The project] demonstrated the key traits that innovative food waste collection systems will need to develop in order to advance the UKs national agenda.”

 

Entry Synopsis

Edinburgh Airport Ltd directly employs over 600 people and with their partner businesses operating on campus bringing the total number of employees to 7,000. These operations generate circa 2000 tonnes of waste annually from aircraft, maintenance, construction, retail and catering. With a significant number of catering and food retail businesses in the passenger terminal food waste accounts for 15% of all waste produced on site. SWR introduced food waste collections and Recycling Officers who take responsibility for managing and processing all waste across the estate, including food waste containers. In 2015 295 tonnes of food waste was collected and taken to AD plants, equivalent to 4 full Airbus A320s in weight.
