Egypt’s tourism sector underwent a massive blow with string of violent incidents in the last six years. However, there has been a recent increase in the number of tourists’ as a result better security system and various measures taken by the government, as confirmed by the tourism official. To quote Hesham El Demery, Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA) Chairman, ‘it is undeniable that political turbulence, terrorism and airline disasters have affected the tourism industry, but times are changing now as the security condition is improving and we are taking all kinds of measures.’
Russia banned traveling to Egypt in 2015 followed by the IS bombing of Russian Metrojet Flight 9268 in October of that year over the Sinai Peninsula killing over 224 passengers. This terror attack compelled many European governments to ban flights from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh. Nevertheless, these bans were lifted up gradually, with only two countries, the UK and Russia left to dissolve the restrictions.
To quote Demery, ‘we have good cooperation with the two countries. We respect their decision of maintaining the ban and are working hard to comply with their requirements. Safety and security of citizens can’t be compromised with. The fact that others have lifted the ban is evidence that circumstances are improving and we have been able to build trust and confidence.’
