After the crew reported smoke in the cockpit over the Atlantic a holiday jet has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport.
So far, five people were taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment which has among them four cabin crew members and a passenger suffering from smoke inhalation.
From Frankfurt, Germany to Cancun in Mexico the Condor flight DE -2116 was travelling having 337 passengers and crew on board.
A May-Day radio distress call was made when the flight was about two hours west of Ireland and it made a U-turn.
A smoke was detected in the cockpit and request was made to turn around divert to Shannon.
The airport authorities implemented Shannon Airport’s emergency plan and it also involved alerting the National Ambulance Service, local authority service and An Garda.
From Shannon Town three units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the airport along with other units from Ennis. Ambulances and advanced paramedic response vehicles were sent by the National Ambulance Service.
At 7.13pm the aircraft landed safely and the aircraft moved slowly along the ground to the terminal building and the fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to look for hotspots in the fuselage.
No evidence of fire was found after an internal inspection was carried out and the passengers will be taken to local hotels overnight and the aircraft will remain grounded.
Engineers are working to establish the origin of the smoke and the flight will resume soon.
