The Dubai-based airline launched Melbourne as its first Australian destination in 1996, 11 years after its first international flight to Karachi.
The first flight arrived at Melbourne Airport from Singapore on 26 June 1996 at 00:39 and departed for the same port later that evening.
Since that inaugural flight, Emirates has grown to become a popular airline for Victorians, connecting them to every corner of the globe.
Emirates currently operates three daily services through to Dubai using Boeing 777 300ER and Airbus A380 aircraft, the latter also connecting through to Auckland.
Melbourne Airport will help celebrate Emirates’ 20 year milestone on Sunday 26 June with entertainment and gifts to passengers.

“Emirates is a wonderful airline partner for Melbourne and we are very proud of the commitment the airline has shown by steadily increasing services over the years to meet passenger demands.”
“Over the years the increase in services and upgauging of aircraft to the Airbus A380 demonstrates Melbourne’s position as a premier destination for tourism, business and education.”
“Since Emirates started flying to Melbourne, it has fully immersed itself in our culture and way of life while stimulating the Victorian economy. Along with supporting tourism to Victoria, the airline has long standing investments, sponsorships and partnerships with iconic Melbourne events and clubs such as the Emirates Melbourne Cup and the Victorian Racing Club (since 1997), Collingwood Football Club (1999), the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (2000) and the Emirates Australian Open Series which culminates at the Australian Open of tennis.”
“We congratulate Emirates on this remarkable achievement of 20 years flying to Melbourne, its first Australian destination, and look forward to the future as we work together to deliver our mutual customers an excellent service.”
