In a pivotal move the long-haul carrier Emirates has dramatically brought down its passenger flight destination from 145 countries to just 13 countries.
Disruption caused by the coronavirus has led to the slowdown in traffic through the airline’s hub in Dubai.
Among a few other select destinations the state-owned carrier will keep flying to the U.S., the U.K. , Japan, Australia and Canada.
Suspension of all passenger flights was announced earlier but the airline reversed the decision after receiving requests from governments and customers to support the repatriation of travelers.
The United Arab Emirates, which is home to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has all but closed its borders to travelers with exceptions for those transiting through or for returning Emirati citizens.
Through the fleet of Boeing 777 frieghters the state-owned carrier will keep operating the cargo flights for the transport of essential goods.
For the majority of its employees for three months the company would reduce the salary but will not cut jobs.
