Denmark’s fifth-largest city basks in over 17 hours of daylight in midsummer, with the sun finally going down at gone 10pm. Attractions include the awe-inspiring nine-meter-high sculpture Man Meets the Sea, as well as nature reserves, hiking and cycling all nearby. A short 12-minute ferry ride from Esbjerg is Fano island, with magnificent beaches, cycle paths, and a number of bunkers from World War II waiting to be explored. The island is famous for its remarkable tidal fluctuation – when the tide is out, it’s possible to walk for several kilometres from the shoreline before reaching the water. With over 16 hours’ daylight in June and July, there’s more than enough time to explore Dusseldorf’s museums, theatres and restaurants, wander its Rhine embankment promenade and admire the city’s stunning architecture or take a boat tour on the river Rhine. From July 17-29, the city holds the Biggest Funfair on the Rhine, a 700-year tradition attracting millions of people to enjoy its beer tents, brass bands and unique entertainment.
