Tourism has been expanding at a rapid speed for over half a century. According to the UNWTO, by 2020, there will be more than 1.6 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide. Ethiopia also continues to benefit from the tourism sector.
For almost all countries, tourism holds great potential for social and economic progresses, generating foreign currency exchange and high revenues via taxation. Tourism is also a major source of employment. In Ethiopia, the nation has done little to promote its historical and natural heritages. In this regard, the role of private investors is very important in promoting and preserving these historical sites.
With regard to the role of tourism in Ethiopia, various measures have been taken by the country’s government and other stakeholders. Ethiopia has also adopted a new brand that makes Ethiopia’s spirit of originality visible – ‘Ethiopia: Land of Origins’.
It is believed that the new brand would assist Ethiopia in defining its identity and also inspire people to create their own memories of Ethiopian tourist attractions. Ethiopia has great tourism potential, but it needs to work hard to increase benefits from the sector. All impediments in tourism industry need to be cleared. All stakeholders, including federal and states governments, are expected to play their roles to the fullest for the success of the sector which is vital to improve the image and economy of the country.
