Ethiopian State Minister for Culture and Tourism Tadelech Dalecho said challenges such as a lack of maintenance, trained manpower and sustainability management issues had been identified at hotels during a star-rating exercise conducted some 16 months ago.
Opening a two-day workshop on hotel maintenance and green management recently in Addis Ababa, the Minister reminded the workshop participants that Hotels need up-to-date maintenance to serve customers in a sustainable and competent manner.
The workshop is a follow-up to the star-rating programme of Ethiopian hotels and is intended to address the previously identified problems.
An International Organization for Standardization consultant and tourism regulatory expert, James MacGregor, also attended the workshop and told the participants that the tourism industry was based on three pillars — tourism products, training and marketing — all of which which are greatly needed for sustainability.
Tadelech stressed the need for quality services to meet the stiff competition in the tourism industry.
