EthiopiaBuilt at a cost of more than 300 million birr (about 14.6 million US dollars), the Jimma Abajifar Airport was inaugurated on Tuesday by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Prime Minister said the airport would have a big role to play in facilitating the export of agricultural outputs of the central Ethiopian region directly to foreign markets.

He said the airport would also create market access to the horticultural industrial zone to be built here during the Second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) period.

The Chief Administrator of Oromia State, Muktar Kedir, said the airport would make a significant contribution to exports of coffee and other agricultural outputs from Jimma and the surrounding areas.

Transport Minister Workeneh Gebeyehu said the government, apart from focusing on land transportation, was also paying due attention to the development of the aviation industry and four international and 18 domestic airports had been built in the past four years.

He said the government also planned to construct an additional five airports across the country in the Second GTP period.
