According to Euromonitor report, 25 world cities feature among the most popular tourist destinations. Hong Kong topped the list followed by Las Vegas, Milan, Prague, Mecca, Pattaya, Miami, Guangzhou, Tokyo, Phuket, Seoul, Taipei, Rome, Antalya, Shenzhen, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Istanbul, Dubai, Macau, Paris, Singapore, London and Bangkok. All over the world, people are visiting these places like never before. Among Asian cities, Hong Kong and Bangkok are attracting the maximum number of visitors.
For the seventh year, Hong Kong topped Euromonitor’s annual Top 100 City Destinations survey, welcoming an extraordinary 26.69 million visitors in 2015. However, Hong Kong saw a downfall in visitor numbers due to drop in younger visitors from mainland China. However, Bangkok gained from Hong Kong’s loss. In 2015, Bangkok attracted 18.7 million foreign visitors, going to the No.2 slot and pushing London down to the third spot.
Although 2015 was a year of turbulence with terrorist attacks, political conflicts, economic uncertainty and health threats like Zika and MERS affecting tourism, the top 100 city destinations registered 55% growth in international arrivals compared to 2014. Japan saw a thriving year in 2016. Cancun, Mexico’s top city destination, dropped in rankings in spite of a boom in Mexico tourism. The Middle East saw a strong growth in 2015 with number of religious tourists to Mecca.
