The Burren Food Trail (Wednesday 16th) officially represented Ireland at a showcase exhibition of the EDEN – European Destination of Excellence, where winners from all participating European countries are being awarded the title of Destination of Excellence 2015 in Brussels.
Tina O’Dwyer and Donal Minihane, Burren Food Trail were recently awarded the European Destination of Excellence Award demonstrating a clear respect for the environment and promoting sustainable local products, all of which encouraged a growth in local tourism.
This prestigious EU-wide EDEN competition, which is themed differently every two years, is designed to encourage and promote a more sustainable form of tourism development and The Burren Food Trail was one of four Irish destinations shortlisted under this year’s Tourism and Local Gastronomy theme.
A total of 20 destinations across the EU were selected as winners of the 2015 award as the Irish winner – Burren Food Trail, now receives free marketing supports from Fáilte Ireland including a professional photo shoot for the destination to be used for promotional purposes and a grant of €5,000 for business development support initiatives.
The Burren Food Trail now joins forces with previous Irish EDEN winners as part of the Ireland EDEN network. Sheep’s Head, Cork; Clonakility, County Cork; Loop Head, Co. Clare; Mulranny, Co. Mayo, Carlingford in County Louth and Cavan town are all previous worthy winners and will work together with the Burren in the future to develop the EDEN brand and collectively promote the Irish EDEN winners.
John Mulcahy, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Hospitality said:
“This year’s theme focused on small, emerging, non-traditional destinations located off the beaten track that offered an authentic food experience. This is something Ireland has in abundance, which made for a close and fiercely competitive competition, and the Burren Food Trail were worthy winners.
“Being able to showcase their local gastronomy amongst the other European Winners in Brussels this week is a real coup for the trail and for Ireland.
Accepting the award, Tina O’Dwyer of The Burren Food Trail said –
“We are thrilled to have been chosen as the Irish winners for the 2015 EDEN Award. Burren Food Trail champions local produce and showcases the culinary delights of the region, uncovering the path that food takes from farm to fork. This award recognises the winning role that our sustainable local gastronomy now plays in the overall Burren visitor experience.’
