Known for its spectacular locales, rich cultural history and brilliant connectivity within and across the world, Europe is by far the most sought-after tourist destination in the world. In 2015, as per UN World Tourism Organization data, Europe alone has seven of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world. France witnessed 84.5 million tourists previous years which is more than its population.
An astounding growth of 34% in Iceland was reported because of its location playing a key hub for trans-Atlantic travel. Summers are the times when the continent receives the highest number of tourists. However, only recently, winter tourism in Europe has become more and more popular. Good number of budget hotels and cheaper airline rates, traveling during the off-season, popularity of skiing and mountaineering, indoor attractions and enjoying winter special cuisines are some of the major reasons to bring this change. Also, traveling to Mediterranean destinations like Italy, Greece, Spain and Malta to escape the harsh European winters and look out for the sun while having a siesta!
There are other factors for an increase in winter tourism in Europe. As we all know that the cost of living is quite high in Europe. It has strong currency and that is the reason why tourists look to save on airfare, rail tickets, hotels and other expenses by travelling during the winters.
