global business travellersA recent Expedia survey states that a greater number of corporate travellers have started fusing business and leisure in what is termed as ‘bleisure travel’ and at times even bring their family along for the weekend.

Luth Research and Expedia Media Solutions discovered that nearly 43% of business trips are actually a combination of business and leisure and 70% of business tourists report doing so every two to three months.

As per a similar survey conducted by the Global Business Travel Association people taking advantage of these opportunities are not the ones who would be normally expected to.

Only about 33% of those between the ages of 35 and 54 said that they had extended their stays for vacation while even fewer of those, above 55, only 23% did so.

The group with 48% participation in bleisure travel comprised the group aged between 18 and 34-year-old business travellers.

Researchers were not capable of stating the exact reasons but then they had speculated that this younger group values traveling on someone else’s dime, enjoying a weekend to check out a city when their employer has already picked up the airfare tab and even paying a lower negotiated rate for accommodations by staying at the same hotel they did while they carried out business on the company’s behalf.

The senior director of Expedia mentioned that nearly 84% of bleisure tourists stayed in the same hotel where they did business and the number one reason they have been moving is due to the fact that they would receive a cheaper deal elsewhere.

The GBTA also argued that employers should encourage bleisure travel as a way to demonstrate they understand this demographic’s stated need for work-life balance.
