As the summer vacationing peak season is around the corner, the number of holiday sickness claims especially from the Britons in Spain is constantly on the rise. Travel firms, therefore are quite anxious looking at the scenario from all-inclusive holidays and cruises.
As per the local media, touts have moved inside popular resorts.
They have been promising the tourists payouts and have been ‘coaching’ them about the proper ‘evidence’ they would require in order to support a claim. UK-based firms have started cold-calling individuals and falsely telling them about a certain fund that has been established to compensate for the deficiencies in hotel hygiene.
There has been a 50-fold rise in the number of such fraudulent cases with the involvement of many claim-management companies that have involved themselves in holiday sickness.
Maria Pittordis who is the Head of Marine, Trade and Energy for the Hill Dickson law firm exclaims that the situation is absolutely out of control.
The surge in claims is an outcome of a clampdown in the legal costs that can be recovered from personal injury claims in the UK. The costs for the claims for illness abroad are not capped. Ms. Pittordis said that the different hotels and firms are also responsible for the blame since they have been too hasty to settle the claims.
She feels that the fact that the hotel guests have been posting against the hotels in the social media platforms is even worse.
The Foreign Office warns the vacationers in Spain saying that one might only consider pursuing a complaint or a claim if he has genuinely been a victim of any illness or injury. If any fraudulent or false claim has been made, one is bound to face legal proceedings in Spain or in the UK.
