Cheryl and Tom Murphy, and their youngest daughter Annie, who turns one while they are on holiday in Ibiza, flew from Leeds Bradford Airport this morning. Their eldest daughter, Edie, passed away last year after suffering a fatal seizure.
The couple won a national competition to name Thomson’s new state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner aircraft after their daughter, following the launch of the #flyhighedie social media campaign – which got tremendous support across the globe. The plane now flies on long-haul journeys with Edie’s name proudly displayed near to its cockpit.
As part of winning the competition, the family also won a Thomson holiday; which they booked in their local Pudsey Thomson travel agents so they could fly from their local airport; Leeds Bradford.
Cheryl said: “We’re looking forward to relaxing and having time away from normality. It’ll be our first time abroad since our honeymoon in 2010 – we will be celebrating Annie’s first birthday over there too, which will be lovely. But it’ll also be bittersweet because in a way the holiday has only come around because of the competition.
“We like to think that Edie will be with us as she’s played a part in us going on this holiday. It’s incredible and overwhelming to have a plane named after her; we know that there will always be a little bit of Edie in the world and we’ll tell Annie all about her and the way she helped us to go on our first family holiday.”
Kayley Worsley, PR and Public Affairs Manager at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “We were so pleased to welcome the Murphy family today to start this special, poignant holiday off. This must be an emotional time for the family and we’re here to be able to start that journey for them in a supportive, friendly way. I hope the family have a wonderful time in Ibiza.”
Thomson currently fly to seven destinations from Leeds Bradford, with an even bigger summer holiday programme in 2017.
