indexFiji’s tourism minister said that the country needs to focus on quality in order to boost its earnings from visitors.

Faiyaz Koya told an industry event yesterday that by providing the best tourism products and services, the tourism sector of Fiji could achieve the best value. He said by focusing on yield rather than numbers, tourism could continue to grow sustainably with less pressure on the environment.

Mr. Koya said that this year, first quarter earnings from tourism went up by 10 percent reaching US$182.2 million.

However, he said that tourist numbers in the first quarter of this year only increased by 3.3 percent to 163,226.

Mr. Koya said that he is confident that over 830,000 tourists will visit this year, earning Fiji $FJ1.68 billion in 2017.
