An addiction by overweight people to fad diets and quick fixes gleaned from the internet is keeping them fat and unhappy according to the organiser of a new women’s health conference to be held in Melbourne next month.
The first Symposium for Health Weekend will be held in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne over three days from Friday, February 12 to Sunday, February 14, 2016, with the aim of empowering women – especially those struggling with weight issues for many years – to take charge of their health.
“Health is not a fad – it’s a fundamental foundation for a long and fruitful life,” says Symposium for Health organiser, Moira Mevissen who lost 42kg in four months last year and was asked by friends to organise a forum for women to gain insights into why weight can be hard to shed. “Many women are fixated on their digital screens, constantly seeking quick fixes and fad diets to lose weight unaware that there are a complex array of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical reasons they are piling on kilos,” Ms Mevissen says.
“The health experts we have gathered from around Australia for this ground-breaking symposium will teach women how to stop and listen to their own bodies first and then look at their whole life to pinpoint underlying causes of weight gain. Many women let their feelings rule their actions but by partnering one-on-one with health experts and learning how to ask the right questions, they can dramatically change their habits and stop the endless cycle of struggle.”
Ms Mevissen said the symposium was deliberately timed with the Valentine’s Day weekend. “I want women to love and value themselves enough to seek help, look at their lives and take intelligent, mature and meaningful actions that return them to the healthy people we all deserve to be,” she says. “I once suffered monthly migraines and sought medication to treat them but last year I sought professional support and realised neck and back problems were contributing to them so after treating myself naturally and nutritionally, I’ve only had three migraines in the past 10 months and my aim is to rid them altogether.
“It all comes down to being calm and mindful and partnering with experts to find the root causes that have stopped you losing weight for so long and then taking actions that serve your own body and valuing yourself enough to stick with it.
“I’m still only half way in my weight loss journey so I’m just a fat chick trying to help other women like me but I now have so much more energy and life force. By helping others I’m helping myself,” she says, adding that women attending the symposium will be able to speak with expert health practitioners for guidance.
