Through his Twitter handle, Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo stated that the men were killed in Dagoretti and Ngando areas on Ngong Road following an alert from the hijacked passengers.
“I confirm that five carjackers were killed last night after officers intercepted two Citi hoppa PSV in Dagoretti and Ngando on Ngong road respectively. The police acted after passengers alerted us,” he pointed out.
The Inspector General commended the police force for acting fast after they were tipped off.“I commend Police County Commander Nairobi and his officers for the swift action last night when alerted by the carjacked passengers. Kudos,” he stated.
The attackers ordered the passengers to surrender all the cash and other valuables they had but the deceased, according to other passengers, refused to heed the gunmen’s order.
He was shot at close range and died on the spot.
The attackers then commandeered the bus into a dark alley off Mombasa Road where they robbed the passengers before escaping on foot.
Kimaiyo had earlier acknowledged that cases of carjacking were on the rise and said that police had increased its operations to contain the situation.
