Five new international conventions added to Quebec City’s schedule

Published on : Monday, February 4, 2013

Five international conventions have been added to the Québec City Convention Centre’s schedule in recent weeks. These agreements will translate into reservations for over 11,000 nights at Québec City hotels, and regional economic spinoffs estimated at more than $5 million.

In addition to one confidential convention for over 500 participants in October 2014, which is projected to bring $1 million in economic spinoffs, the Québec City Convention Centre is proud to announce the following international conferences:

Optimist International 2016 Annual Convention
June 29 to July 3, 2016 – 1,300 delegates – 4,500 nights
Estimated economic spinoffs: $2.4 million
Contact: Mr. Jacques Pelland, senior director, Optimist International Canada

Optimist International officers decided to hold their 2016 convention, the organization’s 98th get-together, in Québec City after visiting the city and its facilities in August 2012. The event was last held in Canada in 2007, in Montréal. Optimist International is an association of more than 2,900 Optimist Clubs around the world dedicated to bringing out the best in kids by sponsoring concrete community service projects aimed at providing a helping hand to youth.

Thirteenth International Conference on Nanostructured Materials

August 8 to 12, 2016 – 600 delegates – 2,500 nights
Estimated economic spinoffs: $1 million
Advocate: Mr. Michel Trudeau, Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec

A first in Canada! Efforts by Québec City and the Convention Centre to attract this group are finally paying off, after an initial bid to host this conference was submitted unsuccessfully in Brazil in 2008. Today, thanks to Michel Trudeau of Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec, the International Committee on Nanostructured Materials has selected Québec City for its 13th biennial conference. And so, following gatherings in Rio de Janeiro (2008), Rome (2010), Rhodes, Greece (2012), and Moscow (2014), Québec City will welcome over 600 engineers and scientists from 70 countries as they come together to discuss their research on nanomaterials, nanoscience, and nanotechnology.

BÉNÉFIQ 2014 International Rendezvous on Health Ingredients
September 23 to 25, 2014 – 600 nights
Estimated economic spinoffs: $300,000

Université Laval’s Institute of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods (INAF), the largest group of researchers in Canada to focus on the complex interactions between foods, their components, nutrition, and health, has confirmed it will hold BÉNÉFIQ 2014 at the Québec City Convention Centre. 2014 will mark the second edition of this scientific and business gathering dedicated to health ingredients; the Centre also hosted the event in September 2012.

2013 International Conference on Age-Friendly Cities
September 9 to 12, 2013 – 600 delegates – 1,500 nights
Estimated economic spinoffs: $800,000

Following a visit from two World Health Organization (WHO) representatives, the City of Québec and the Québec City Convention Centre are slated to welcome the International Conference on Age-Friendly Cities in September 2013. In 2010, Québec City took the step of becoming an Age-Friendly Municipality (MADA: Municipalité amie des aînés) under the program introduced by Ministère de la Famille et des Aînés du Québec to support its Action Strategy for the Elderly. In so doing, Québec City has made a commitment to creating environments that help its elderly population adopt and maintain active lifestyles.

A promising future
The confirmation of these five international conventions is very encouraging. Between now and 2017, 88 conventions—including 31 international, 25 Canadian, and 32 Québec events—will be held at the Québec City Convention Centre, thanks to its successful promotional and sales strategies. The team continues to work actively on signing new agreements and convincing decision makers to choose Québec City for their upcoming events.
