Flight NZ5018 landed safely at Napier Airport with 71 passengers on board on Friday afternoon after the incident.
Residents reported hearing some strange sounds and witnessing smoke that poured from the airplane while it circled the airport. This airplane was en route to Auckland when the incident occurred. Emergency services crews rushed to the tarmac to meet the plane.
Firefighters boarded the airplane to check the condition, as reported by a leading news media platform.
No injuries have been reported as a consequence of the incident.
A spokesperson of Air New Zealand told the media that an engine of the aircraft started experiencing surging a short while after it took off. Therefore it resulted in the fuel burning unevenly that ultimately made the engine back fire and it is similar to what one might experience in a car.
The intermittently rich fuel mix resulted in short flashes being seen near the engine’s exhaust. The engine was shut down and the aircraft landed without further incident.
The aircraft involved was an ATR72-500 which is designed to operate safely on one engine and pilots are trained for this scenario.
