The plane was travelling from Dallas to Detroit when fire was spotted by Johnathan Tafoya-Montano, a flight attendant. The fire was seen in the rear lavatory. It was extinguished immediately. The plane was close to the Detroit airport when the pilot reported of fire to the control tower. However the plane landed without any untoward incident.
It was later revealed after investigation from the FBI that the fire was in fact started by the flight attended, Johnathan Tafoya-Montano who had reported the incident. He was arrested on charges of destruction of the aircraft and making false statement to the authorities. He was released later on condition that would prevent him from flying without court permission.
