The construction is scheduled to commence in March.
It would take place on the northwest corner of FIU;s main campus on Southwest Eighth Street close to Sweetwater off Florida’s Turnpike in western Miami-Dade County.
It is expected to be absolutely ready within June 2019 and the average room rates are expected to start around $153 per night, as per plans. This project involves a 150-bed, seven-story hotel that would be well-equipped with a fitness center, restaurant, pool and a conference center.
The Florida Board of Governors that makes policy for state universities would be voting on whether to approve plans at a meeting on Thursday in Gainesville.
This is going to be the very first university-affiliated hotel in South Florida. At other place inside the state, the University of Florida in Gainsville also has a conference centre and hotel. And, the University of Central Florida in Orlando also plans to start construction on it.
In 2013, Florida Atlantic University had discussed plans for a conference centre and hotel on its campus in Boca Raton but is yet to submit its official plans to the state.
Many universities in the state have conference centers like the FIU that has a centre on its Biscayne Bay campus in North Miami.
The officials of FIU have offered detailed plans to the Board of Governors.
The project had always been an essential part of the master plans of the FIU. But, studies commissioned by the university in 2008.
