A Fluor-led joint venture (JV) comprising Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Herzog Contracting Group and The Middlesex has been nominated to design the building team for nearly $2bn Green Line Light Rail Extension project in Boston, United States.
The contract was awarded by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and will absorb the construction of seven stations. It is including the relocated Lechmere Station and a vehicle storage and maintenance facility.
This will also see the addition of a mainline branch of MBTA’s Lowell Line from the relocated Lechmere Station in Cambridge to Medford, as well as a branch line for the MBTA Fitchburg Line to Union Square in Somerville.
The infrastructure business line president Hans Dekker said that Fluor is pleased to be chosen to lead the joint venture team that will oversee the design and construction of this project. The team brings an integrated solutions approach to designing and building mega projects, a legacy of rail experience and a proven track record of delivering complex projects for the clients. The construction is scheduled to begin next year, with services set to start in late-2021.
The new light rail service is expected to reduce road traffic congestion, enhance local and regional mobility and mitigate the issue of rising greenhouse gas emissions across the region once completed.
The daily ridership of the Green Line Extension’s seven stations is estimated to reach 45,000 by 2030.
