Located in the northern island of Luzon, the Cordillera region has the largest number of mountains in the Philippines. At the same time, it is also one of the poorest and most marginalized regions in the country, with the poverty standard in its Mountain Province being more than twice the national average.
The Department of Tourism in the Philippines, a member of the Mountain Partnership (MP) and newly appointed representative of the MP Steering Committee for governments in the Asia-Pacific region, expressed an interest for taking part in the ongoing MPP Initiative and invited the MPS and Slow Food to the Cordillera.
The MPP Initiative has established a voluntary labelling scheme for mountain products for supporting small mountain producers from developing countries. The scheme includes value chain improvement, marketing strategy development, specific training programmes, as well as the granting of the MPP narrative label.
