Approximately 70,000 to 80,000 cruise passengers had landed at Mormuga Port Trust in the 2018-19 tourist seasons. However, next season could witness 1.5 lakh cruise passengers come ashore at the port to explore Goa, said MPT chairman E Ramesh Kumar. While speaking at a workshop on cruise tourism, Kumar also mentioned that the cruise vessel arrival number would double in the forthcoming year.
Tempering the optimism, western region director for India Tourism Neela Lad explained that MPT, port authorities, Customs & Central Excise, Bureau of Immigration and security agencies have to work alongside each other, if cruise tourism had to seriously take off in Goa.
“There is a tremendous increase in the cruise tourism. Cruise passenger arrivals were around 70,000 to 80,000 during the just concluded season and I am confident the figures will touch to around 1.5 lakhs in the current year,” said Kumar in his official address.
The workshop was arranged to enhance the inter-agency coordination and generalization of procedures in order to provide a “hassle free experience” to cruise passengers, said MPT officials.
