France issues fresh warnings of terror attacks

parisFrench Prime Minister Manuel Valls issued a stark warning to the country on Sunday: France remains a target for terror and the country will suffer new attacks.

He said that the threat from terrorists is at its maximum level and predicted more attacks even though intelligence services are regularly preventing them from happening.

Valls said authorities were monitoring around 15,000 people in France who they believe are in the process of radicalization. Earlier, French officials had said 10,000 people were on their “fiche S” list, used to flag radicalized individuals considered a threat to national security.

On Saturday, French authorities arrested a juvenile on suspicion of preparing an imminent terror attack involving “knives” and “bladed weapons,” media reports suggested.

Police arrested three women Thursday night suspected of preparing a car-bomb attack. The arrests followed the discovery of a car containing five gas canisters parked near Paris’s Notre Dame cathedral earlier this week.

An estimated 700 French citizens are involved with Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq, including 275 women, Valls said Sunday.
