The joint project between South West Trains and Icomera has seen free WiFi installed on 110 carriages and means all services between Salisbury and Exeter offer improved connectivity for passengers, making it easier to work or keep in touch with friends and family.
Arthur Pretorius, Customer Service Director for South West Trains, said: “This is the first time that South West Trains services to Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire have offered free WiFi and is great news for the thousands of passengers who use these services every day.
“This investment follows the significant improvements introduced for passengers in the West of England in December. The new timetable provides extra seats, new services and more frequent connections for many stations and was introduced alongside the refurbishment of the diesel trains which provide these services.
“More passengers are travelling with us than ever before and we now provide more than half a million journeys every day. We are investing millions of pounds to provide new carriages, additional car parking spaces and better passenger experiences and we are sure the further expansion of our free WiFi will be a further boost for passengers.”
Dave Palmer, Managing Director of Icomera UK, said: “This marks the beginning of another chapter in Icomera’s ongoing supply of industry-leading transport Wi-Fi solutions and connected applications. We’re delighted to be working closely with South West Trains and delivering a passenger experience that all parties can be proud of.”
In December 2015, South West Trains introduced a new timetable for services to the West of England, which included direct services to London Waterloo for Bruton and Frome for the first time as well as additional services for many stations including Castle Cary, Sherborne and Templecombe and a significant increase in services between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill.
Further improvements are scheduled to be introduced this May, including Summer Saturday services linking Weymouth and Dorchester with direct services to and from Salisbury, Tisbury, Gillingham, Templecombe, Sherborne and Yeovil
The expansion of free WiFi to stations in Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire has been delivered by installing WiFi on Class 158 and Class 159 diesel trains. These trains are predominantly white in colour and run between London Waterloo, Salisbury and Exeter St Davids.
This expansion in free WiFi has been installed by Icomera on behalf of South West Trains.
