Although there is a 33% increase in tourist arrivals from January 1st to March 10, 2017, the number of French tourists visiting Tunisia is much below expectations, as confirmed by Wahida Jaiet, director of Tunisia’s National Tourist Office (ONTT) in France. To quote Jaiet on the sidelines of the 42nd edition of the World Tourism Fair (SMT), “The booking provided by the main tour operators marketing the Tunisian destination is about 49%. These figures are hopeful, but nothing is gained yet.”
Mourad Kallal, a tourism professional said that Tunisia lags behind in terms of group tourism market. He cited the issue of air transport, the lack of means and the increase in the tariffs posted by Tunisair as important factors for lagging behind. A dozen Tunisian tourism professionals representing the regions of Sousse, Zarziz-Djerba, participated in the 42nd edition of the SMT, presenting promotional tariffs on the destination outside the holiday periods.
The Tunisian stand at the event offered visitors the scope to learn about various tourism offers in Tunisia and skill of Tunisian craftsmen and artisans in pottery and calligraphy. A taste of the Tunisian pastry was offered to visitors who were interested in visiting the destination.
