G Adventured announced its first animal welfare policy which was developed in consultation with World Animal Protection, the Jane Goodall Institute and the World Cetacean Alliance on World Animal Day.
Three ways travellers can ensure that the wildlife remains safe is by not having physical contact, feeding non-domesticated animals in captivity or the wild and not visiting performances or shows involving wildlife animals.
Along side the new policy a video entitled ‘Wildlife has the right to wild life’ has been launched to educate people on how to interact with wildlife in a way that does not harm animals or put people both locals and travellers in danger.
The video is a reminder on the basic animal welfare like not taking pictures with wild animals that have been sedated, riding elephants will will have been harmed to carry humans.
The strengthen ed aspects of the policy like not feeding animals or having any physical contact with them along with addressing the consumption of endangered species by travellers.
Melissa Matlow, Campaign Manager for World Animal Protection felt proud to have advised G Adventures on their animal welfare policy and to help them identify harmful tourist activities to ensure no animals are mistreated. We see G Adventures as a leader in humane and sustainable tourism and were excited by the work we will continue to do together to end animal cruelty and keep wildlife in the wild where they belong.
Jamie Sweeting, vice president of social enterprise and responsible travel, G Adventures mentioned that the policy replaces the company’s existing animal welfare guidelines, and acknowledges the operator is taking things to the next level across the business.
