Gastro outbreak compels luxury cruise with 3,000 to dock in Melbourne

celebrity-solsticePassengers on board a cruise vessel that had departed from Sydney on Monday have been struck with a very aggressive outbreak of gastro.


The luxury cruise liner, Celebrity Solstice carrying nearly 3,000 passengers is the leading cruise ship of the Solstice-class of cruise ships. It has confirmed numerous cases of gastrointestinal illnesses.


There have been 18 reported cases of gastro-intestinal illness symptoms that represented nearly 0.6% of the 2,759 guests on board, in addition to the 1,256 crew members.



The people affected by this sort-lived illness are being provided medical treatment by the ship’s doctors.


Now they are responding well to the over-the-counter medication. In the recent months there have been quite a lot of cases associated with gastrointestinal illnesses in the community in Australia. Health experts recommend simple hand hygiene is the most superior defence against stomach viruses that every year affect as many as 300 million people all across the world. Common cold is the most prevalent malady.


Celebrity Solstice would be leaving Melbourne as scheduled around 5 p.m. today.


This sort of a virus generally causes gastro symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting, spreading through person-to-person contact, indirectly through ingestion of contaminated food and water.


Celebrity Solstice that is operated by Celebrity Cruises is Australia and New Zealand’s highest-rated cruise vessel as per the website.


One of the passengers on board the cruise vessel said that the ship is supplying hand sanitiser and encouraging passengers to utilize it.
