GATE 2013 Summit Set to Address the Growing Need for Pilots in the Region

Published on : Monday, November 4, 2013

rtThe Gulf Aviation Training Event (GATE) takes place at the Dubai Airshow, 18 – 19 November 2013 at Dubai World Central (DWC). The Middle East’s dedicated training event for the aviation industry is set to create debate with the challenging theme ‘Breaking the Paradigms: Training the Gulf’s New Generation of Aviators,’ highlighting the shortage of pilots in the region.

With pilot age-related retirements increasing due to airline mergers and consolidation occurring in the North American market and significant expansion continuing in the Middle East and Asian markets the supply of air transport qualified pilots will be under continuing pressure. In addition the recent imposition by the US aviation regulator, the FAA, of significantly increased hours requirements for airline co-pilot candidates is likely to add further pressure.

During the two day GATE summit these pressures and their potential impact on pilot training are set to be addressed in panel-led discussions on topics such as; ‘Regulatory Oversight of Outsourced Training’ and ‘Hand Flying in Airline Operations – Who, Why and When?’. Two organisations that will be present at the GATE summit – CTC Aviation and Emirates Airline – have long identified the increased demand for pilots and the subsequent repercussions for the industry and therefore have set about developing solutions.

Emirates are in the final stages of completing their own answer to the pilot shortage – a home-grown Cadet Pilot Academy – to be located at the new Al Maktoum World Central Airport, Jebel Ali, Dubai and Captain Alan Stealey, Executive Vice President, Flight Operations for Emirates, highlighted his participation at the GATE summit by saying “the new Emirates Pilot Academy is located in the heart of the Gulf’s expansion; I am set to discuss the advantages of our new strategy during the GATE summit, and how Emirates is set to ensure a reliable supply of highly-trained and professional air crew over the long term expansion plan of the airline” he further commented, “Emirates is committed to producing a growing portion of our pilot need internally as we recognise that the increasingly competitive pilot marketplace over the next 10 years is significantly under-supplied”.

CTC Aviation Group Limited, one of the world’s largest providers of Cadet Pilots to the air transport industry, is also a gold sponsor at this year’s GATE summit and an exhibitor within the GATE pavilion –is equally focussed on the future of the world’s pilot need and is planning to open new training facilities in the near future.Captain Rob Clarke, CEO of CTC Aviation, recently remarked: “We are seeing an increasing demand for cadets joining our hugely popular CTC Wings training programme.

With graduates being placed directly onto jet equipment with our partner airlines we are seeing a year on year growth requirement which requires us to double our capacity over the next few years,” a clear indication they believe that the market for their student pilots will grow for some time.GATE will be moderated by Captain Ed Davidson, Vice President of Flight and System Operations for the third largest airline in Canada, Porter Airlines, a Mid-East Airline veteran and the former Senior VP of Fleet for Emirates Airline.

Delegates wishing to participate in GATE 2013 will also have access to the full five days of the Dubai Airshow – registration is open online at www.gates.aero The Dubai Airshow is organised under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and in co-operation with Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Dubai Airports and the UAE Armed Forces.
