An app- powered service to be launched will allow passengers to order food, drinks and products for sale anywhere inside the airport and items to get delivered at the gate. The app is set to be operative this week in Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) and one with the similar features to be launched in San Diego international Airport in August.
Research by developers of Airport Sherpa (Now at BWI) and At Your Gate ( soon at SAN) showed that American fliers are verified ‘gate huggers’. A majority of the travelers grab a seat and stay at the gate once through with the airport security checkpoint. It hardly matters the departure of the flight, gate huggers do not stray from the gates and miss out on the dining and shopping experience apart from the airport food and retail outlets offered. The gate huggers miss out on the potential sales too. The rents and fees generated from sales helps in increasing the percentage of the operating budgets at the airports.
Earlier in 2009 at the JetBlu’s JFK Terminal 5 and now available in OTG managed airport terminals in North America, used the iPad enhanced seating areas to order food, drinks and other products. But with the change in technology mobile is the best means to get anything delivered at the doorstep.
Airport Sherpa has partnered with Airmall, airport retail and food concession operator to launch on demand gate-delivery services at BWI this week. It also plans to expand its services around the country in the days to come.
Patrick DellaValle, CEO of Airport Sherpa said that the passengers will have a better experience and can access as many stores across the terminals.
Bretty Kelly, vice president of Airmall Maryland said that there will be more choices and convenience for various local, regional and national offerings at BWI Marshall, they can order food from other concourse without having themselves to go.
The potential passenger can now avail the service and increase the sale of the vendor that might not have happened.
The app Airport Sherpa is free to download with a gate-delivery fee of $3.99 to $7.99, depending on the distance to be covered. At Your Gate to be rolled out at San Diego International Airport will have an initial flat fee of $6.99 promising a minimum delivery time. It might also come with a built in tipping app to ensure the transactions are cashless.
At Your Gate will provide a 10-minute delivery window, it has partnered with Grab, a mobile –ordering app that allows travelers to pre-order food for pick up at 150 concessions in 18 airports. The team will expand its services in other airports.
