China has always basked in the glory of Mao Zedong, and now keeping that feeling alive, the country has erected a giant gold statue of the father of the People’s Republic of China in the rural Henan province.
The statue has been made with contributions from businessmen and rural communities. Nearly 3 million yuan ($459,000) has been spent to build this huge structure to pay homage to the great icon of China.
Made of steel and concrete and painted in gold, the structure is now open to public viewing after being completed in December.
There are mixed feelings and some controversy on the money spent behind building the 36.6 meter (120 ft)-tall statue which is seated among scrubby farmland.
Also there is criticism about the choice of the destination as the Henan province was the one that brought Mao’s disastrous “Great Leap Forward” economic and social reforms. Millions died as a result of the policies.
However this is not the first statue of Mao there is another giant statue erected in Gonggar County, Tibet Autonomous Region in 2006 which is the former largest measures 7.1m (23 ft).
