Glasgow has successfully achieved 526 conferences till 2022 as confirmed by Glasgow Convention Bureau. The bureau is a part of Glasgow Life expressed that this opportunity has the possibility to contribute £142m to the local economy in five years.
Growth in international associations and medical and life sciences meetings had been witnessed especially.
Scottish Event Campus (SEC), NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow’s universities and the wider business community are the main partners supporting Glasgow Convention Bureau.
As per the statistics of the Bureau, from April 2012 till March of this year, the total number of international associations selecting Glasgow as their conference destination annually rose by 63% from 43 to 70 respectively.
Ever since 2014, medical and life sciences conference business increased by 56%. It said that more than 158 conferences in the year 2016/17 had the possibility to add £63m to Glasgow’s economy by 2022.
Cllr David McDonald, deputy leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow is now recognised as one of the world’s leading conventions cities.
“The volume of international associations choosing to bring their conference here has grown by more than 60% over the past five years, which is a reflection of the strength and global reach of our academic and business communities and their wider knowledge hub networks. Medical and Life sciences sector conferences attracted a record number of delegates to the city in 2016/17 and it was the best-performing sector in terms of the number of conferences confirmed for future years – that’s because we’re at the epicenter of medical innovation and world-leading research.”
