In keeping with global tourism trends, urban areas in Macau tend to develop to meet needs of growing number of tourists. The Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF) was conducted in Macau, where a group of panelists discussed how urban tourism expenditure is shaping the region’s tourism. They discussed how new attractions, landmarks and cultural objectives are attracting tourists and that managers of tourist locations should ensure that urban tourism development shouldn’t deteriorate the city’s environment.
Demand for leisure travel is expected to bring rapid growth in urban tourism as well as economic benefits and reputation for cities. Tourism in urban areas should provide better services, events and benefits, since tourists these days look for unique and authentic experiences. The panelists discussed that the attractions should have heritage value and developed infrastructure to be important travel destinations. The urban tourism market has become more dynamic and undergone change in demography and behavioral characteristics. According to TripAdvisor, 60% travelers are looking for new experiences and eager to know what’s best in a particular destination. Travelers now need everything fresh and quick and usage of mobile internet is making things easier for them now, right from sharing experiences to payments via phone.
