Greater Columbus Convention Center Creates Friendly ‘Come Grow With US’ Floral Competition Among Customers

columbus convention center logoIn celebration of the added benefits the SMG-managed Greater Columbus Convention Center’s (GCCC) $125 million expansion & renovation will bring to clients, the sales department has created a “Come Grow with Us” flower-growing competition among them.

“The idea is that the GCCC is growing in size and capabilities and we would love for our customers to join us in celebrating,” said Sherry Chambers, GCCC senior director of sales.
“Whether their events are growing or they are just growing the plants, it’s all part of the teamwork honoring the growth of our facility and city through a fun competition.”

Sales managers delivered to dozens of participating clients the flower pots, growing soil, marigold seeds, plant food and instructions needed to participate. The “unofficial rules and regulations” are simply to keep the flowers in the original pots and not swap them for flowers that are artificial or grown in nurseries.

After the flowers are delivered, sales managers visit the contestants every two weeks to measure and photograph plant growth.

Marigold-growing kits are also being delivered to some Columbus media outlets this week in the hope that they will join the fun in their own category and generate a “ratings war” based solely upon plant growth.

All participants will be invited to a reception at the GCCC in September for final judging, refreshments and prizes.

“As we elevate the guest experience at the GCCC, this is another way to engage our customers in the excitement of the expansion and renovation,” added Sue Graves, GCCC assistant general manager.

“Our clients are long-established partners in our progress,” said John R. Page, GCCC general manager. “Now we’ll see which ones can grow the most magnificent marigolds.”
