Greece global tourism rises to 14th place in 2016, expected to be Top 10

greeceGreece took the 14th place on the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) list for 2016 despite the recession.


The bailout- dependent Greece has managed to attract nine million more tourists over the past five years not taking into account the cruise ship arrivals.


Greece has jumped three spots from its 17th place due to its high performance. According to the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) it will reach the “Top 10” standing soon.


In 2012 15.5 tourism arrival was recorded which surged to 24.8 million by 2016 and is considered to be the biggest percentage rise made by any country between the specific time period.


The tourism arrival in Mexico between 2012 and 2016 was 49.5 %, giving it a second place. Thailand followed with 45.5 percent.


It was reported that Greece tourism rose due to Turkey’s tourism implosion within the same span of time. Turkey overtook Ukraine for  15th place while Turkey lost at an average of 12 million tourist per year, and that too mostly Russian tourists.
