Greece’s tourism sector sees greater stability

indexFollowing a string of attacks in major and popular Mediterranean hotpots like Egypt and Turkey, the tourism sector in Greece is reaping rich rewards from a period of political stability and attracting more tourists.

According to Greece’s alternate minister for tourism Elena Kountoura, 2016 is a good year for Greek tourism and international arrivals went up 7% in the first nine months of the year. The summer months saw the maximum tourists. She said at the WTM London that by this year end, the numbers are expected to exceed 27 million. Cruise arrivals too saw an all-time high. This is indeed good news for Greece. Tourism accounts for over 25% of Greece’s GDP and will play a major role in economic revival of the country. 2008 saw Greece’s economy slump and unemployment spike going up to 25%; hence, it needs tourism revenue for recovering and creating sustainable jobs.
