Green tourism is a recent fad in travel industry. Many cities and travel companies are constantly working and contributing to the establishment and development of sustainable tourism. As per statistics released by the General Department of Tourism, in 2016, Vietnam received more than 10 million overseas travelers with an year-on-year increase of 26 percent, 62 percent of domestic travelers which is 9 percent over the previous year.
In 2016, Vietnam earned more than VND400 trillion (over US$17.5 billion) from tourism which is 15 percent increase in comparison to 2015. This year, the tourism sector wishes to receive 11.5 million global tourists and serve 66 million domestic tourists, earning VND460 trillion (nearly US$20.2 billion). By 2020, Vietnam wants to attract 17-20 million foreign arrivals and 82 million domestic tourists with 10% contribution to the country’s GDP. Nevertheless, Vietnam ranked 75th out of 141 countries as per General Department of Tourism followed by Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Also, Vietnamese tourism products are to be made yet more striking. The quality of tourism services in Vietnam is yet to meet the raised standards with social and natural tourism needing attention. Experts believe that focused attention on planning and sustainable development can improve Vietnam tourism a lot.
