Tourism in the county generated $87 million in direct tourism expenditures, 630 jobs and produced $15 million in payroll, the figures showed.
More than $6.5 million in local and state sales tax revenue was generated in Greene County. As a result, each household within the county pays approximately $275 less per year in local and state taxes than they would if that revenue were not generated via tourism.
Kathy Knight, chairman of the Greene County Partnership’s tourism task force, said the $275 represents an increase over last year’s figure.
“I think it was $259 last year,” Knight said.
Knight attributes the increase, in part, to sporting events like the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Baseball world series and golf tournaments that drew visitors to motels, restaurants and retail business.
Knight said it’s important to try to recruit more tournaments, a goal that Director of Tourism Tammy Kinser has previously voiced, noting that sports and outdoor recreation could be bringing even more revenue into the county.
