The Tasmanian Government is defending its management of wild areas, as the Greens seize on leaked documents which they say prove that the Liberals have been “negligent” about the World Heritage Area, putting tourism developments before wilderness values.
When the Liberals came to power in 2014, they had plans to allow “sensible developments” within National Parks and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA).
The Government opened up an expression of interest process for tourism proposals, releasing a new draft management plan for the TWWHA for consultation in January 2015, which contained development in the area.
One proposal, which is now in its final stages of approval, is for a luxury camp on Hall’s Island at Lake Malbena in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Customers here are expected to arrive by seaplane or helicopter.
Confidential minutes leaked to the Tasmanian Greens from 2015 revealed advice on the proposal to the then state growth minister Matthew Groom from Coordinator-General John Perry.
In the leaked minutes, Mr. Perry advised Mr. Groom that the “Secretary of [Department of Primary Industries] DPIPWE provided advice from the Parks and Wildlife Service that included that the proposal is not compatible with the current Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area management plan”.
Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said that it was confirmation that the management plan was changed to allow developments, rather than promoting wilderness values.
