Growth of 27.3% in cruise passenger traffic in 2015

Malta Tourism AuthorityCruise passenger statistics published today for the period October to December 2015 show a significant growth of 15.0% when compared to the same period last year. Total cruise passenger traffic during the fourth quarter of 2015 amounted to 176,295; 23,044 more passengers compared to the same period a year ago.


Strong growth was recorded from Spain (+211.0%), Italy (+40.5%) and America (+21.3%).The excellent performance registered during the period April to December results in an overall 27.3% increase for the year 2015 compared to 2014. Cruise passenger traffic (transit and landed) reached 600,156 in 2015; 128,602 more passengers than last year. There were 4 more cruise liner calls in 2015 resulting in a total of 307 visits. In 2015 larger ships with bigger number of passengers called in Malta. In fact, the average number of passengers per vessel increased from 1,556 in 2014 to 1,955 in 2015.


Cruise passengers originating from non-EU countries registered a higher growth rate of +39.3% compared to the increase of 23.9% in passengers hailing from EU countries. Growth was registered from several markets with the highest absolute increases recorded from Italy (+35,274) followed by Spain (+18,894), Germany (+11,605) and Australia (+4,426). Furthermore increases were registered across all the different age groups with the highest percentage increase of +46.6% recorded in 0-19 age group.


The Malta Tourism Authority is very satisfied with the results that have been announced. They are the result of hard work by all stakeholders in what is a highly competitive market and continues to highlight Malta’s attractiveness and popularity as a leading cruise destination in the Central Mediterranean. It clearly proves that we still have a lot to offer to the discerning visitor and the Authority continues to nurture this segment in all its aspects, not only because they are our guests, but also because they can be our ambassadors and future tourists.
