Hamburg Airport Cargo Center (HACC) vorn: Staatsrat Dr. Rolf Bšsinger (Behšrde fŸr Wirtschaft, Verkehr und Innovation) Hinten: Michael Eggenschwiler (Vorsitzender der GF Flughafen Hamburg GmbH)After more than two years of construction work, the Hamburg Airport Cargo Center (HACC) will soon be ready to commence operation. Before the official launch, Hamburg Airport is today presenting its new airfreight facility to the public. The efficient processes of the new facility were explained on-site to Dr. Rolf Bösinger, Department for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation and Johan P. Schryver, Chairman of Hamburg’s logistics industry association, “Hamburger Spediteure”, who were joined for the occasion by Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. The modern infrastructure, located on Weg beim Jaeger, can handle up to 150,000 tonnes of freight each year – more than double the volume handled in 2015. Hamburg Airport is thus optimally positioned for the future. Costing more than 50 million euros, the new facility is replacing the existing cargo terminal from the 1960s.

The new logistics center offers state-of-the-art technology and facilitates optimal operational processes – a decisive factor, in particular for time-sensitive goods. From the very beginning of planning, therefore, all later users – logistics companies, airfreight forwarding agents, and cargo airlines – were consulted and involved in the process. “In order to deliver genuinely high performance, a logistics center must be oriented towards the needs of the users. For our new Cargo Center, the collaboration of all those involved enabled us to succeed with this. We have created a central hub with sustainable viability that will play a pivotal role in the life of Hamburg as an airfreight location. I am very pleased about this,” says Michael Eggenschwiler, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg Airport.

Dr. Rolf Bösinger, Department for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation: “The new Cargo Center makes Hamburg as an airfreight location even more attractive. Although, for the most part, goods traverse the world by container ship, aircraft remain indispensable when it comes to the rapid transport of valuable and time-critical goods.”

Efficient processes – from the truck ramp to loading the aircraft

Costing more than 50 million euros, the new facility is replacing the existing air cargo center from the 1960s, which was no longer able to fully satisfy the increasing demand for quick and efficient handling of freight. “Today, it is more important than ever that the infrastructure of a logistics facility ensures rapid, efficient processes, from the truck ramp to goods-in and security checks all the way to loading onto the aircraft. This saves time and money – and is therefore especially attractive for our customers,” explains Alexander Mueller, who as Director of Cargo at Hamburg Airport is responsible for airfreight facilities at the site.

The 60,000-square-meter site has 44 loading ramps for articulated trucks and 36 parking positions for tractor-trailer combinations, along with three office buildings. The heart of the facility is the airfreight hall, with a floor area of around 20,000 square meters. A 60-meter underpass under the street, Weg beim Jaeger, links the facility directly with the airport’s apron.
