Hamburg Airport is on course for success: for the first time in its 104-year history, the airport has served more than 15 million passengers within one year. The 15-millionth passenger was Marina Chernova from Hamburg, who checked in with KLM for a flight to Amsterdam. The jubilee passenger was greeted at check-in by Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, and Eddy de Meyer, Head of Station for KLM in Hamburg.
“We are delighted by this great result with more than 15 million passengers in 2015. This would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of our airline partners. KLM has been active in Hamburg since 1920, and I am very grateful for this longstanding and trusting cooperation,” said Michael Eggenschwiler. “With the stable development of traffic figures, Hamburg Airport remains a driving force for growth and a significant employer for Hamburg and the Metropolitan Region. Our environmental commitment means that, at the same time, we are investing in sustainable development.”
“We at KLM are thrilled to be able to welcome Hamburg Airport’s 15-millionth passenger on board one of our aircraft. Our airline from the Netherlands has been very closely associated with Hamburg Airport for many years, and we look forward to continuing this successful cooperation,” commented Christian Herzog, General Manager of AIR FRANCE KLM.
KLM: a reliable partner for more than 90 years
The Dutch airline KLM has operated scheduled flights to Hamburg Airport since the 1920s. With demonstrable success: last year, KLM recorded 323,300 passengers at Hamburg Airport, placing the airline in tenth place on the list of airlines operating out of Hamburg. KLM’s aircraft movements in 2014 numbered almost 3,600. Similarly successful figures are expected for 2015. In the 2015/2016 winter timetable, the airline operates four daily services from Hamburg to Amsterdam with a B737-700. For the summer timetable, the frequency will increase even further, with KLM offering five daily services to the Dutch capital from summer 2016, using a combination of B737 and Embraer 190 aircraft. KLM’s service to Amsterdam has the highest ratio of transfer passengers, around 73 percent, of any route from Hamburg Airport.
Successful development in passenger figures
Over recent decades, Hamburg Airport has recorded continuous passenger growth. In 1987 the airport recorded five million passengers in one year, whilst in 2005 the ten million passenger mark was reached in Hamburg for the first time. Just last year, Hamburg Airport celebrated a new record of 14 million passengers in one year. According to current forecasts, the passenger volume for 2015 will reach approximately 15.5 million by year’s end. For 2015, then, in comparison to 2014, Hamburg Airport will report passenger growth of around 5 percent in just one year. With around 1,540,040 passengers, October 2015 was the busiest month so far in the airport’s history.
Flight movements growing more slowly than passengers
The deployment of larger, more modern, and more efficient aircraft from Hamburg Airport, combined with better load factors, means that passenger numbers and aircraft movements are not directly proportional. Because the number of passengers per flight continues to rise, the number of aircraft movements per year is growing more slowly than the number of passengers. The forecast total of around 158,500 aircraft movements for 2015 is lower than the level recorded in 2006 and represents an increase over the last year of just 3 percent.
