Hamburg – a city committed to be environmentally aware

Hamburg wants to be a leader in developing tourism of the future. The city aims to be environmentally aware, climate-neutral and enable authentic travel experiences.

Hamburg’s Altona district is not traditionally one of the areas that visitors to the Hanseatic city want to travel around.

“Experience Hamburg Sustainably” is the motto pursuing the goal of “creating a sustainable balance between growth and prosperity on one hand and ecological compatibility, social responsibility and cultural sensitivity on the other”. In real terms, this means that Hamburg is focusing on growth in the tourism sector, but also taking responsibility for the developments that go hand in hand with it. The aim is to be climate-friendly, promoting cooperation between Hamburg`s citizens and its visitors.

Visitors need to be accommodated, and the quality of life in the city needs to be enhanced. But the space and resources in the city are limited. That’s why, as per the slogan, you have to be creative and sustainable with what you have.

Besides traveling to Hamburg by train using 100% green electricity, one can spend the night in a sustainable accommodation that is committed to the environment and nature.

There is a whole range of them in Hamburg. They come with climate-friendly construction, organic food and regional products, their own environmental management or even a bee colony on the roof.
