A runway had to be closed down at one of Tokyo’s main airports on Monday after the tyres of a Hawaiian Airlines jet were punctured while making an emergency landing, leading to the cancellation of some domestic Japanese flights.
A total of eight tires blew out when the Airbus A330 returned to Haneda Airport after a display indicated a problem in the hydraulic system, Japanese media reported.
Fortunately, none of the 293 passengers and crew on board was injured, the reports stated, but the plane remained on the runway after daybreak as the tyres were replaced.
Japan Airlines cancelled some domestic flights, and warned of the possibility of further flight disruptions. Haneda Airport authorities said in a statement that international flights, however, had not been affected.
An aviation expert said the brakes might not have functioned properly if there were a hydraulic system problem, causing the blowouts.
