The hottest culinary news in the coolest location is the new appointment of Head Chef Daniel Johnson at Alila Jabal Akhdar. Way over 2,000m above sea level up in the crisp-air of Al Hajar mountain range of Jabal Akhdar, the luxury resort will now offer a tempting array of palate pleasing dishes.
Since its opening in May 2014, Alila Jabal Akhdar has rapidly gained repute for the refreshingly healthy and authentic dishes served at the table that are so familiar to its sister outposts peppered across South Asia and Southeast Asia. With fresh produce delivered every day to the resort from local Omani farmers, the international menu – inspired by the golden age of Omani cuisine – exudes a rich variety of flavours crafted to a gastronomical level.
Newly appointed Head Chef, Daniel Johnson, comments “The harmonious diversity of culture and cuisine experienced in the Jabal Akhdar region makes for a fascinating food scene. I will be adding new ideas to the menu with the seasonal produce and incorporating the traditional Omani cooking methods.” At Alila Jabal Akhdar, the kitchen is a reflection of the season, ensuring its guests an authentic culinary journey that is respective of its environment. Serving a boutique-style menu with daily specials to entice guests, the menu is true to that of a mountaintop retreat: natural, seasonal, healthy and deliciously hearty.
Jabal Akhdar is ultimately considered the fruit bowl of Oman, and this is never more evident than in September. Known to the region as the pomegranate season, the land also becomes a haven for walnuts, plums, peaches, figs, and much more. September will be the perfect time to really experiment with the menu which will be centred on this sweet-pink delicacy.
“We now have the ability to create a holistic journey through our cuisine, Spa Alila and the Alila Experiences to mirror the seasons of the Jabal Akhdar region,” adds Johnson.Alongside Omran – Oman’s leading tourism-related investment, development and management company – Alila Jabal Akhdar has recently involved itself in an impactful CSR initiative that supports the Omani community with the latest ‘Farming for Hospitality’ project. The programme encourages the harvesting of fresh produce from local farmers, which is subsequently purchased by the resort and incorporated into the menu.
