Heavy downpour brings traffic to standstill in Jakarta

689India FloodsSeveral parts of the Indonesian capital was inundated with flood waters paralysing life and bringing traffic to a standstill as heavy rain lashed Jakarta since yesterday.

 
At least 10 roads in Jakarta including Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Kalianda Raya and Jalan Raya Cengkerang were under 15 to 40 centimetres of water, a local television news reported.

 
Apart from the capital, several major areas in north Jakarta including Jalan Hybrida to the Kelapa Gading Sports Mall and Boulevard Raya in Kelapa Gading were under one metre of water.

 
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta, the rainy weather is expected to continue until the end of March and the heavy rain is expected to peak next week.

 
In west Jakarta, several spots including the areas in front of Universitas Trisakti and Jalan Daan Mogot from the direction of Grogol also experienced severe traffic congestion due to floods.
